MUZAFFARLATEEF GILL Objective: BACKGROUND: NAFLD is considered a predisposing factor for development of type 2 diabetes mellitus. There are not very many prospective published studies to evaluate NAFLD as a predictor /precursor of type 2 diabetes mellitus. we wanted to study the independent role of NAFLD as a predictor of type2 DM in healthy volunteers over 5 years. Methods: METHODS: we prospectively enrolled 100 healthy volunteers, in our practice in November 2007. These volunteers Protein Tyrosine Kinase inhibitor have no history of liver disease and alcohol abuse. Subjects with Diabetes and pre diabetes were excluded from this study. We defined DM as, fasting glucose >125 mg/dl and HGBA1C >6.6. Prediabetes was defined as fasting glucose between 100 to 115 mg/dl and HGBAIC between 6.2 to 6.5We quantified steatosis by hepatorenal ultrasound with hepatorenal index (HRI), which represents the ratio between the mean brightness level of the liver and the right kidney. Metabolic parameters and ultrasonography evidence of NAFLD were applied

on these volunteers SB525334 supplier at baseline and after five years of interval by identical protocols. Results: RESULTS: The 90 volunteers were available for analysis, after 5 years of observation. Mean age was 45 mean BMI was 26, 60% male and 40% were female.25% has baseline NAFLD without type 2 DM or prediabetes at baseline survey. NAFLD was considered and independent/predictor variable and DM was considered dependent/outcome variable in logistic regression analysis. Subjects with incident DM or pre DM had highest baseline prevalence of NAFLD as compared to control (35% vs. 25 %. p = 0.006) and higher level of baseline HRI (1.5 vs. 0.95 p = 0.002). Baseline NAFLD and HRI were independent predictors of incidence selleck kinase inhibitor of DM or Pre DM in a multiple logistic regression analysis adjusting for age, gender baseline

BMI abdominal obesity and family history of DM. Conclusion: CONCLUSION: NAFLD diagnosed by ultrasound is an independent risk factor for DM in the general adult population. NAFLD patient should be considered as population at risk for development of DM and needs close monitoring. Key Word(s): 1. Methods: Methods: we prospectively enrolled 120 treatment naive patients with chronic HBV. Enrollment period was from january 2009 to june 2009.
